Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme
The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) allows employers in regional or low population growth areas of Australia, to sponsor employees who are foreign nationals for a permanent visa to work in Australia.
This visa is for employers operating in regional and low population growth areas of Australia, who want to sponsor skilled workers to fill skilled vacancies in their business.
The employees applying for a visa can be either of the following:
- skilled workers from overseas
- skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.
This visa allows you and any dependent family members included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.
Australian permanent residents can:
- live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
- study in Australia at school or university
- receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
- access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
- be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
- sponsor people for permanent residence.
Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457)
This is the most commonly used program for employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia on a temporary basis. Through this program employer can fill nominated skilled positions in for a period between one day and four years for their organizations.
Employers can be either:
- Australian businesses
- overseas businesses.
With this visa people you employ from overseas can:
- work in Australia for a period of between one day and four years
- bring any eligible secondary applicants with them to Australia – secondary applicants can work and study
- after entering Australia, have no limit on the number of times they travel in and out of Australia.
Retirement Visa
This visa is designed for retirees and their partner who:
- want to spend some of their retirement years in Australia.
This visa is only available to:
existing Retirement visa and former Retirement visa (subclass 410)
If you are granted this visa, during its validity you can:
- leave and re-enter Australia at any time
- work in Australia
- undertake study in Australia.
This visa is a temporary entry visa. It does not lead to permanent residency in Australia or to Australian citizenship.
Investor Retirement Visa (Subclass 405)
This visa is for self-funded retirees who:
- Have no dependants and who want to reside in Australia during their retirement years.
- Will not lead to Australian permanent residence or citizenship.
- are 55 years or older, have no dependants (other than a partner who can be any age),
- Are able to make a significant long term financial investment in Australia.
If you are granted this visa you can:
- work in Australia for up to 20 hours per week
- travel in and out of Australia any number of times as long as your visa is valid
- live in Australia for four (4) years
- Have your partner accompany you to Australia.
Aged Parent (Residence) Visa (Subclass 804)
This visa allows aged parents to remain in Australia permanently, with their children who are living in Australia. This visa is for you if you are a parent of a child or stepchild who is a settled Australian citizen, and one of the following applies:
- at least half of your children are permanent residents in Australia
- you have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country.
- This visa allows you and your dependent family members to live as Australian permanent residents in Australia.
You can also:
- work and study in Australia
- receive healthcare
- access certain social security payments
- be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship
- sponsor people for permanent residence
Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Visa (Subclass 864)
This visa allows aged parents to remain in Australia permanently with their children who are living in Australia. if your children is a settled Australian citizen and one of the following applies:
- at least half of your children are permanent residents in Australia
- you have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country.
You can also:
- work and study in Australia
- receive subsidised healthcare
- access certain social security payments
- sponsor people for permanent residence
Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 884)
This visa allows aged parents who
- are in Australia on a temporary basis
- have children living in Australia, to live in Australia for two years.
- cannot extend or renew this visa.
- are granted this visa and want to live in Australia permanently,
- must apply for a permanent visa before this temporary visa expires.
Contributory Parent (Residence) visa (subclass 864)
This visa is for you if you are parent of a child Australian citizen, and one of the following applies:
- at least half of your children are permanent residents in Australia
- you have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country.
This visa allows you, your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as temporary residents in Australia for two years.
You can also:
- have access to Australia's medical expenses and hospital care assistance scheme, Medicare
- work in Australia
Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Visa (from Subclass 884 to Subclass 864)
This visa is for you if you hold a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884) and want to apply for a permanent visa Contributory Aged Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 864). This visa allows aged parents to remain in Australia permanently with their children who are living in Australia. You must be sponsored by your child, or another eligible sponsor in Australia.
This visa allows you, your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as permanent residents in Australia.
You can also:
- work and study in Australia
- receive subsidised healthcare
- access certain social security payments
Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (from Subclass 173 to Subclass 143)
This visa is for you if you hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 173) and want to apply for the permanent Contributory Parent (Migrant) visa (subclass 143). You can apply for this visa any time before your Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa expires. This visa allows you, your accompanying partner and dependent family members to live as permanent residents in Australia.
You can also:
- work and study in Australia
- receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare
- access certain social security payments
- be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship
- sponsor people for permanent residence
